THEA 4920

Theatre Arts Short Course (3)

THEA 4002

Special Studies in Theatre (2)

This study abroad program will also include the opportunity to see 5 live theatre productions in London.  Participants will have input about which shows the group will attend. It is suggested that students study any historic plays (such as Shakespeare) before seeing the play and read preview/reviews of other works. After each play there will be a group discussion and each student will be required to write a formal critique.  Grades will be based on attendance and participation in oral critiques and discussions as well as the written critique. Students are encouraged to write detailed notes so they can complete their critiques upon return to Utah. Critiques should be submitted electronically to me (czublin@weber.edu) no later than one month after the end of our time together in London.  Extra credit will be granted for writing a critique for any production we attend outside of London.

COURSEWORK

Students will create a design portfolio that will provide the bases for a design for one of the elements in a play production OR customize a design project that works with almost any major.

For those students creating a theatrical design portfolio, each will have a choice of 3 different plays to use-

Plays TBD

Possible topics are costume or set design for a specific play or fashion design based on historic artifacts. Student will be encouraged to work collaboratively- two or more students could research different design elements for the same play.  Students must read the play and complete a preliminary analysis (character or scenic requirements) before we meet in London.

Students should include the following in their design portfolio- drawing directly from artwork, architecture and historic clothing and sites, photographs (only where allowed), color, line and texture studies, fabric swatches, and art reproductions.

Students will have an option to continue working on this project and complete renderings and final artwork for their project during the fall 2018 semester.  You can even receive another 1.0 credit hour for this work by registering for THEA 4220- Design Seminar.
